A chaotic incident unfolded on I-495 in Virginia on Monday afternoon, as a driver involved in multiple crashes managed to escape into drainage tunnels, eluding authorities.
The event began around 2:35 p.m. on January 6 when Virginia State Police responded to two separate crashes in the eastbound lanes near Eisenhower Avenue. While handling these accidents, a third crash occurred about a mile behind the initial scenes.
As officers processed the third crash, the driver of one vehicle fled, leading to another crash less than a mile down the highway.
The suspect’s vehicle came to a stop in a ditch, but the driver then fled on foot, crossing both eastbound and westbound lanes of traffic.
The suspect entered a drainage area under the highway and disappeared into a smaller tunnel, prompting an active search by state police and rescue teams.
As of Monday night, the driver remained on the loose. Authorities have not released additional information, and the investigation is ongoing. Updates are expected as the situation develops.
