Burlington Schools Celebrate Diversity by Adding Diwali, Eid, and Yom Kippur to the Calendar

The recent addition of Diwali, Eid, and Yom Kippur to the Burlington school calendar reflects a growing recognition of cultural diversity within the community.

Lauren Singh, a Burlington resident of Jewish and Indian heritage, expressed her appreciation for this acknowledgment, as it helps her daughter learn about various cultures and fosters inclusivity.

The Champlain Valley School District, which encompasses several communities, has made this change to honor its increasingly diverse population. Other areas, like New York City, are also recognizing Diwali as a school holiday, highlighting a broader trend toward inclusivity in school calendars.

In South Burlington, Rupali Agrawal has been hosting Diwali celebrations since moving to Vermont in 2011, emphasizing the importance of community and connection to her roots.

Although the South Burlington School District does not officially recognize Diwali, families like the Agrawals continue to celebrate, demonstrating the festival’s significance.

Winooski, noted for its diversity, already recognizes multiple holidays, including Diwali and Eid. Superintendent Wilmer Chavarria discussed the importance of reflecting community diversity in educational practices, indicating a positive shift among school leaders to embrace new cultural considerations.

While Vermont still lacks a uniform statewide school calendar, the discussions around these changes signify a growing awareness and acceptance of cultural diversity, encouraging a more inclusive environment for students.

The Agency of Education supports districts in aligning their calendars with community demographics, emphasizing the role of holidays in promoting belonging and cultural exchange.
