Big Y has launched its annual Sack Hunger Christmas initiative with the goal of donating meals to local food banks in Connecticut and Massachusetts. The program supports four major food banks: the Food Bank of Western Massachusetts, Worcester County Food Bank, Greater Boston Food Bank, and Connecticut Food Share.
These organizations work alongside local groups such as soup kitchens and food pantries to assist families in need.
Customers can contribute $5 online or in-store at Big Y supermarkets and Table & Vine Fine Wines and Liquors, with each $5 donation providing 10 meals. The campaign runs until December 11.
This year, Big Y is intensifying its efforts by donating a percentage of profits from its floral, produce, and meat departments during specified periods.
From November 14–20, a portion of revenue from the floral and produce departments will go to the initiative. From November 29 to December 4, Big Y’s private label items will contribute, and from December 5–11, the meat department will also donate a share of its sales.
Big Y’s president and CEO, Michael P. D’Amour, highlighted the importance of combating food insecurity, stating that the program helps local food banks continue their work.
The Sack Hunger program has provided millions of meals over the past 13 years, in addition to donations of fresh produce, meat, dairy, baked goods, frozen foods, and groceries.
