Biden s Block of US Steel Deal Sparks Backlash from Republicans and Local Leaders

President Biden’s decision to block the $14 billion acquisition of Pittsburgh-based US Steel by Japan’s Nippon Steel has sparked considerable backlash, particularly from Republican lawmakers. Congressman Dan Meuser, who is contemplating a gubernatorial run, has criticized Biden’s stance, calling it “irrational” and arguing that Japan, as an ally, is not a national security threat. Meuser further emphasized that the deal would bring investment, not outsourcing, labeling it as “insourcing” instead.

In addition, Senate President Kim Ward has chastised Governor Josh Shapiro for not publicly supporting the sale, urging him to join the legal challenge against Biden’s decision. Ward has called on Shapiro to back the lawsuit filed by US Steel and Nippon Steel.

Governor Shapiro, while refraining from taking a public stance on the matter, has downplayed the criticism from Ward, referring to it as “chirping.” Shapiro stated that his priority is to protect Pennsylvania jobs, hinting that the state has alternative plans and ongoing discussions about the issue. He has not committed to joining the lawsuit but emphasized that his focus remains on protecting workers and pursuing other options for the state’s economy.

Despite the closure of the Pennsylvania Farm Show on January 11, the political debate over the steel deal is expected to continue in Harrisburg.
