Alaska Federation of Natives Skips U.S. House Candidate Forum for 2023 Convention

The Alaska Federation of Natives AFN will not include a U.S. House candidate forum at its 2023 annual convention, which has traditionally been a key event in Alaska’s political calendar.

The AFN convention is the state’s largest Native forum, and its political forums have historically been important for statewide candidates.

This year’s decision has drawn attention, as Rep. Mary Peltola, the Democratic incumbent, seeks re-election against Republican Nick Begich and two other challengers.

Benjamin Mallott, AFN’s president-elect, stated that the decision was due to timing and the prioritization of other panels that align with the convention’s theme and initiatives, such as the “Get Out The Native Vote” efforts.

He also confirmed that a resolution endorsing Peltola, similar to 2022, will be considered by delegates on October 19.

Begich expressed disappointment with the cancellation, stating it deprived the Alaska Native community of the opportunity to make informed decisions by hearing from all candidates.

Begich emphasized his family’s long history of working with Alaska Natives and noted his open-door policy.

Peltola’s campaign criticized Begich for previous remarks about her absences from congressional votes, some of which occurred during personal and community-related events.

Peltola is seeking AFN’s endorsement once again, following her success in 2022 when she secured the group’s backing and subsequently won her seat.
